• Responsible for the complexities of product development, with cost effective formulas, processing methods, substrate materials, and waste and emission regulations
• Responsible for researching raw materials and methods, developing, adopting, modifying, and adjusting coating systems in the laboratory to produce products, as well as initiating the finish in production.
• Train quality control and manufacturing personnel in the proper control and handling of new coating systems and produce written procedures and data sheets for all involve
• Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
• Revises new approaches to satisfy unusual or specialized requirements
• Provides leadership to the Quality Control Technician as well as conducts annual performance appraisals of this position
• Works on research & development projects and report results, issues, concerns or problems to the General Manager
• Studies and analyzes chemicals and chemical systems which can be combined into coating compounds for application to various substrates at a competitive cost
• Keeps detail records and places them into initial production
• Monitors plant trials and writes final standards
• Improves current products and identify and applies new technologies that will help lower costs or enhance performance
• Stays up to date on current and advancing technology related to raw materials including greige goods and coatings development to provide custom and toll coatings for customers requiring quick evaluation and response time including but not limited to waterbased coating chemistry and application
• Reviews existing & new chemicals and greige goods to be substituted for those currently used in the event of cutoffs, shortages, quality problems, or non-competitive price situations
• Provides technical support and develop solutions to infield problems as dictated by customers and the sales & marketing group to maintain the customers' trust and satisfaction
• Maintains a working knowledge of plant methods, procedures, and equipment and assists in solving production problems
• Audits records, chemical and coating systems, standards and safety procedures for compliance; takes corrective action as required.
• Review and generate the annual facility's SDS/GHS, Tier II, Prop 65, REACH, CHEMTREC, emission regulations, VOC based on inventory of chemicals & actual usage (Form R) and other related environmental specifications.
• Evaluate opportunities for VOC reduction thru chemical selection of low VOC based chemicals
• Other duties as assigned Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry is preferred
  • 3+ Years of quality management experience
  • 2+ Years of chemistry experience
  • Aware of environmental air, water and waste requirements and applicable OSHA regulations
  • Proven leadership experience
  • Maintains an organized and clean work area
  • Critical thinking and analytical problem solving
