Recruiting for a full time Palliative Care physician for the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri within the Primary Care Service line. Board eligible or board certification in Palliative Care is preferred

For further information, visit: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-visitus-forrecog.html.As a palliative care physician, this provider's primary responsibility will be to work with patients and their families to identify, control and alleviate physical, and emotional discomfort, and other symptoms that often accompany a serious or chronic health condition. This physician will use their medical expertise to focus on providing management of patients' symptoms, in addition to holding intensive meetings with family members regarding goals of care and ensuring that delivery of care is coordinated across both inpatient and outpatient health care settings. This position will work as an integral part of an interdisciplinary care team and serve as the link to patients, caregivers, and family members to available support groups and other services.

The primary task of this position will be to act as a palliative care physician although some primary care and inpatient responsibilities may be asked of the provider. The following responsibilities are likely to be carried out, regardless of the doctor's specialty, on a daily or weekly basis:


  • Education of Medical residents
  • examining and talking to patients to diagnose their medical conditions;
  • carrying out specific procedures as appropriately credentialed;
  • making notes, both as a legal record of treatment and for the benefit of other health care professionals;
  • working with other doctors as part of a team, either in the same department, or within other specialties;
  • liaising with other medical and non-medical staff in the hospital to ensure quality treatment;
  • promoting health education;
  • undertaking managerial responsibilities such as expanding services, implementing national guidelines, planning the workload and staffing of the department


    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm

    Basic Requirements:


    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.


      Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care

      Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements: In accordance with 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1614.203, the individual selected must be physically and mentally able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform the essential functions of this position without endangering the health and safety of self and others. The physical requirements of this position may include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching (overhead), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
